Sonardyne’s Scout USBL is a portable vessel based acoustic positioning system designed to track divers ROVs and AUVs and towfish in waters up to 1,000 metres. The system calculates the position of a subsea transponder by measuring the range (distance) and bearing (heading) from a vessel mounted transceiver to a small acoustic transponder fitted to the asset; a technique known as Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) positioning that offers high accuracy performance combined with efficient subsea tracking operations.
Three versions of Scout USBL are available: Scout, Scout Plus and Scout Pro. Scout and Scout Plus are systems designed for general tracking applications at ranges up to 500 metres. Scout can track one surface vessel and four subsea transponders, whilst Scout Plus can track six transponders and incorporates a Responder mode. This enables the system to calculate the responder’s position at a much higher update rate, ideal for fast moving vehicles such as AUVs, ROVs and towfish.
Scout Pro is designed to support complex subsea positioning applications through its fully featured software. It provides greater accuracy, tracking for up to 10 subsea transponders and a 1,000 metre range. The advanced topside control hardware supplied with Scout Pro systems enables experienced users to operate it using Sonardyne’s Wideband digital acoustic signal technology. The benefits of using Wideband include greater immunity to noise interference and a tenfold improvement in measurement repeatability.
The Scout transceiver is a portable, vessel-mounted acoustic transmitter and receiver that interrogates subsea transponders attached to assets being tracked (AUVs, ROVs, divers, towfish) and determines their range, bearing and declination to determine their position from the vessel.
The Scout Surface Command Unit (SCU) is a portable command unit with integrated PC, sensor interface and rechargeable battery pack incorporated in a splash-proof case. It supplies power and communications to the Scout transceiver and can be operated on almost any type of boat.
The Scout Coastal Transponder has been designed for low cost applications. The small size and lightweight design of the transponder enables normal or Emergency relocation of critical points of interest, accurate underwater distance measurement and small submersible vehicle/diver tracking.
